A Practical Guide to Lowering Your Electricity Bill

Before that dreaded electricity bill arrives in your mailbox, several key factors come together to determine its total cost. Your electricity usage throughout the day, the plan you’ve signed up for with your electricity provider, and the type of electricity meter you have all play significant roles in shaping the final amount you’ll have to pay.

But don’t stop reading just yet. Understanding each of these components and finding what suits you best can greatly help you reduce your electricity bills.

Understanding Peak, Shoulder, and Off-Peak Periods

Electricity distribution in Sydney is managed by three primary entities: Ausgrid, Essential Energy, and Endeavour Energy. Depending on which one serves your area, your electricity consumption will follow different peak, shoulder, and off-peak timeframes.

For Ausgrid Customers:

  • Peak: Monday to Friday, from 2pm to 8pm (excluding public holidays).
  • Shoulder: Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays), from 7am to 2pm and from 8pm to 10pm. Weekends and public holidays, from 7am to 10pm.
  • Off-Peak: All other times.

For Essential Energy Customers:

  • Peak: Monday to Friday, from 7am to 9am and from 5pm to 8pm.
  • Shoulder: Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm and from 8pm to 1pm.
  • Time Of Use Off-Peak: All other times.

For Endeavour Energy Customers:

  • Peak: Monday to Friday, from 1pm to 8pm (excluding public holidays).
  • Shoulder: Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays), from 7am to 1pm and from 8pm to 10pm. Weekends and public holidays, from 7am to 10pm.
  • Time Of Use Off-Peak: From 10pm to 7am every day.

Choosing the Right Electricity Tariff

The choice of your electricity tariff should align with how energy consumption is assessed on your property, and there are two primary types to consider:

Single Rate or Flat Rate Tariff:

  • A single rate tariff applies the same rate for electricity usage regardless of the time of day.
  • This option is ideal for properties with high electricity consumption during peak hours, as the single rate is typically lower than the peak rate in a time of use tariff.
  • For example, a typical household might find this tariff suitable when everyone returns home from work or school, and various devices, appliances, and lights are in use.

Time of Use Tariff:

  • A time of use tariff charges you based on when you use electricity during the day.
  • Electricity is most expensive during peak periods, cheaper during shoulder periods, and least expensive during off-peak times.
  • This plan is beneficial for individuals who work night shifts away from home or those who work from home during weekdays.
  • Time of use tariffs work best for those who primarily use electricity during off-peak hours. Additionally, if you can manage your electricity usage effectively, this tariff can motivate you to reduce or shift your consumption to save money.
  • It’s important to note that this tariff is only available to customers with an interval or smart meter.
